Morgan Speaks

Yes, there are actual Satanists out there. No, they aren't Wiccans.

Being Wiccan, and not Satanist, I don't feel comfortable writing about that religion at length, but let me try to explain for the sake of clearing up what should be a simple issue. First off, Wiccans aren't Satanists. We simply don't consider Satan to be a real entity, as the idea of a supreme evil being (Satan) was never a part of our religious conception of the universe. Satan belongs to the worldview of the Semitic religions, and Wicca does not belong to that religious family. However, from what I do understand, Orthodox Satanism (aka The Church of Satan, which is the organization you'll find books about in the Occult section of your local bookstore) focuses on individuality, instead of the more traditional "obey your Lord" doctrines of the Semitic faiths.

The problems arise when Joe Public begins to associate Paganism with Satanism. Now, Satanism is not in itself a bad thing, but the fact is that by purposely associating yourself with concepts that Christianity believes itself to be fighting against, (and especially that pesky little concept of absolute evil) Satanists are asking for trouble. Unfortunately, Wicca is often caught in the middle. Finally, some groups claiming to be Satanists (but which are not recognized as such either by the Church of Satan Satanism or Wicca) have been known to commit all sorts of atrocities (including animal sacrifice, drug abuse, and even murder) the blame for which usually falls on Wicca's collective head. Aside from accumulating huge karmic debts for themselves, these people don't do anything to benefit any religion. So despise their actions and what they stand for, but please don't associate them with either Satanism proper or Wicca.
